Broken- Short Story

Wrote this last night. Only a few handwritten pages on a small notebook. Inspired by the song Monster by Meg & Dia. Lyrics can be found here. I don't usually write in short sections like this. . . .

"Love me." Such simple words, changing one's life forever. "Love me, and I will make all your worries melt away." His eyes were deep and sincere, his body quaking in anticipation of her reply. She did love him. He knew that; she knew that. And yet she couldn't help but shake her head slightly in a pattern that firmly stated "No."
"If only you did," he snarled, loss and pain and confusion pushing back at his eyelids as he lunged for her throat.
They were alone. Alone, and no one was around to hear her scream as it shattered the darkness sweeping in around them.

That night no one came rushing to see what was the matter. She was trapped by him as he darted forward to deal another blow, then crept back to watch her whimper. Icy rage pumped through his veins. She had to love him. He had tried so hard. He had worked for so long. They had been through so much, and all in preparation for that one moment. And now that moment was over, and everything had gone wrong.

It happened quickly. His fist went up, turning down sharply and landing with a thud onto her flank. I could only watch as she cowered and backed away slowly, too weak to muster even a groan. All night she had been through this. All night.
She was broken. He realized that, remorse flooding his amber gaze. He rushed forward, struggling close between us. "I'm so sorry."
He supported her weight gingerly as she whispered into the dawn, "How could I ever love a beast like you?"
And then she coughed scarlet and he roared and dropped her quivering body and he leapt up and ran and ran and kept on running. And then her body was cold, cold like the fear that echoed on his footsteps, and I cried for him and I cried for her and when I looked down at myself all I could see was the red mess that was her blood.
